Officer Marissa Dowhan receiving the ROTY (Rehabilitant Of The Year Award) with ISYS Nurse Case Manager, Ashley R., RN, and the rest of the care team.

ISYS makes every effort on behalf of customers to ensure injured workers get the appropriate care in the right timeline so they can regain health and return to work. ISYS case managers have facilitated thousands of successful recoveries over the years, and some have been remarkably triumphant stories.

Here is a recently closed case that we found especially inspiring:

On March 29, 2020 in Arizona, Phoenix Police Officer Marissa Dowhan, along with two other officers responded to a domestic dispute. Unfortunately, the situation escalated when a man with a gun shot at all three officers.

Ms. Dowhan’s gunshot wound resulted in serious injury to one of her legs.  Upon arrival at the hospital, she was treated by the trauma team and had to undergo immediate surgery. She later had to have another surgery to assist with movement of her knee, and then in 2021 she required an additional surgery. In total she endured three surgeries to prevent from having to lose her leg and to restore its function.

Ms. Dowhan completed two full years of extensive rehabilitation, including more than 250 physical therapy visits to regain range of motion and function of her leg.

In addition to the physical recovery, Ms. Dowhan had a tremendous emotional and psychological trauma to overcome.  Sadly, her commander was killed at the scene and her fellow officer was severely wounded as well.

Ms. Dowhan’s surgeon described her as determined, dedicated, tenacious and long-suffering.  We believe these special qualities she possesses made all the difference in her recovery

We are proud of ISYS Nurse Case Manager, Ashley R., who provided continued support to Ms. Dowhan throughout her medical care while focusing on progressing treatment towards rehabilitation and a successful outcome.

Ms. Dowhan is a hero who took courage in the face of a horrible event and injury, to persevere, and ultimately heal, and it’s rewarding to know that ISYS had an important part in helping her return to work as a police officer. We wish her continued health and thank her for her ongoing service to the Phoenix community.
